For those looking to relocate, you can be reassured that this isn’t simply a place for singletons and the retired, as there is a lovely family atmosphere. If you’re considering moving to Mallorca with children, it is possible to start a new life on this island, providing a new lifestyle for the whole family. Of course, moving with children can present a different set of challenges, so we'll look at the island's schools, both private and public, as well as the health system and the general lifestyle you can aspire to in beautiful Mallorca.

Public Schools in Mallorca

When making any decision to move, it is likely that one of your biggest considerations is the access to schools. If you have children under the age of 16, you will need to make some provision for their education. Fortunately, there are a number of options in Mallorca.

There are local state schools in Mallorca or concertados, which are part state and part privately run schools. These include Spanish and International education centres.

There are 224 pre school and primary public schools across the Island and 71 public high schools. There are also 115 semi public schools and approximately 170 private institutions.

You’re likely to find a local school in almost every village and these schools are free, except for textbooks. You simply need to enroll at the local town hall and supply a few documents translated into Spanish for the Department of Education.

Mallorca is also home to four universities if you are interested in higher education opportunities for your children.

Private Schools in Mallorca

While public schools teach in Spanish and Catalan, the local dialect on the Island, private international schools tend to teach in Spanish and English. So, if you prefer your children to be taught in both English and Spanish to ease their transition, there are seven English International schools, which are all located in or around Palma.

The Montessori School of Mallorca

The Montessori School is a private, international school for 3 to 16 year olds. It follows the English national curriculum, with school days of 9 am to 3.30pm and an early 1.30pm finish on Fridays.

The core principle of Montessori is to mix children of different ages, to encourage children to learn from others. For this reason, children are assigned to one of four mixed age group classes:

• Children’s House: Ages three to six years
• Lower Primary: Ages six to nine years
• Upper Primary: Ages nine to 12 years
• Secondary: Ages twelve to 16 years

Classes have 28 to 30 children, but secondary education classes are limited to 20 children. Students can also access a variety of extracurricular activities including music, drawing and animation, digital arts, sports, yoga, baking and robotics.

Green Valley School

Green Valley School is located in Сын Вида, one of the most exclusive area in Mallorca and is open to students aged six to 18 with a British curriculum. The objective of the school is to stimulate the talents, positive qualities and potential goodness in every child, encouraging academic excellence and development of a good character.

The school offers classes in English, Spanish and Catalan, but there are additional language classes in French, Swedish and German. School hours are 9 am or 8.50 am to 4.30pm or 4.45 pm for primary and secondary students respectively.

Queen’s College

Queen’s College is one of the most well established international schools in Mallorca with a history dating back almost 50 years. It caters to students aged three to 18, with a British Curriculum to prepare students for GCSEs and A Levels.

This school aims to promote learning in a secure, happy environment to enable students to develop skills, knowledge and personal qualities. School hours are 8.50 am to 3.50 pm with classes in English, Spanish, and Catalan with additional languages including French, German and Chinese.

The extracurricular activities at QC include homework club, rhythmic gymnastics, art, sports and science.

The Academy International School

Located in Marratxí, The Academy International School offers education based on the British curriculum, catering to children from nursery to university entrance. This institution places significant emphasis on creating a well-rounded educational experience.

Positioned in Calvià, the main town in the southwest region of Mallorca, Agora Portals is counted among the top international schools in Spain. It provides a comprehensive education, following the Spanish curriculum as well as the International Baccalaureate (IB). With a wide variety of extracurricular activities, this school offers an enriching experience beyond academics.

Baleares International College (BIC)

With campuses in both Sa Porrassa and Sant Agustí, BIC offers the English National Curriculum to children aged 3 to 18. The school aims to foster a multi-cultural environment where students are encouraged to grow both academically and personally.

Health Care in Mallorca

Another priority if you’re moving to Mallorca with children is likely to be healthcare. There are a few options for healthcare, but they largely depend on your employment status. If you will be working for a Spanish company, you can receive a Tarjeta Sanitaria, which provides free healthcare for you, your spouse and your children in Spain.

Freelancers or “autonomo” can declare in Spain and also receive this health card. This will provide coverage for all local clinics and the state run hospitals.

For those who will not be working in Spain, you can choose from a number of private healthcare insurances. Policy details can vary from provider to provider, so it is best to check the details and verify which private health insurance companies work with the nearest hospitals to where you will be living.

Dental treatment is free at selected dentists for all children up to the age of 18.

The Family and Children Lifestyle in Mallorca

Mallorca is certainly family and child friendly. It is not only safe, but your children can learn another language and enjoy an outdoor lifestyle with swimming and water sports most of the year.

Getting your children enrolled in school will help them to make friends, so they can start to find playmates and you could even start to socialize with other parents.

Outside of school, there is plenty to keep the whole family entertained. Mallorca has numerous family attractions including water parks, go-karting and mini golf. There is even the amazing Katmandu Park, which has a plethora of rides and interactive exhibits along with its own mini golf course and little water park. If your family is a little more adventurous, you could visit the Jungle Park and explore the ropes, bridges and zip wires to travel from tree to tree. And of course, there are a variety of beautiful beaches along Mallorca’s coast, so you can create a relaxed and fun lifestyle for the whole family.
